The Mimico Canadiens Hockey Association is pleased to welcome two hockey teams from Rankin Inlet October 6-16, 2017 to share in a cultural and learning exchange.
The Northern Exchange experience includes NHL and AHL Hockey games, trips to the Royal Ontario Museum, Hockey Hall of Fame, Niagara Falls, nature walks and of course a lot of hockey playing for the participants, aged 10-13 years. On Tuesday, October 10th, the players will spend the day at the Mastercard Centre, watching the Toronto Maple Leafs Practice, touring the Archives and dressing rooms, meeting NHL Alumni and filming a segment for Hockey Night in Canada. On Thursday, October 12th they and their families will attend Cirque du Soleil.
As part of the Northern Exchange Learning Component of the program each child will bring their twinned exchange partner to school on Thursday, October 12th. At 1 p.m. that afternoon, more than 700 students from 15 different schools in Etobicoke will welcome the visiting hockey players at a special assembly hosted by the parents of the exchange participants at John English Junior Middle School. Juno award-winning musician and motivational speaker Susan Aglukark will be offering a speaking and singing presentation of Canadian Inuit history.
The exchange is being funded through a grant from Experiences Canada, a charity supported by the Government of Canada, and $10,000 raised locally by the children themselves through initiatives such as a bottle drive and shot challenge. Honda Ontario has generously come on board as a premier sponsor to help with hosting costs including new jerseys, hoodies and much more.
Part two of the Northern Exchange, organized by the parents and coaches of the respective teams, will take place during the last week of April 2018 when the Mimico players will visit Rankin Inlet.
